Bin Chipping

Recycling Bins in North Down have been fitted with unique electronic identification chips.

How do they work?

The microchips are scanned by computer equipment on the bin lorry each time the bin is collected. The chips cannot tell what the actual contents of the bin are. Collection crews do however check recycling bins to ensure that they contain the correct materials. Each time your bin is emptied the date and collection time are matched to the house number. If your bin is contaminated it may be recorded against the house number.

Why do we need chips?

We are obliged by the Department of the Environment to monitor and report performance in relation to recycling. The microchips allow us to gather collection statistics and to determine set out and participation rates. They can also be used to return misplaced bins to the right address. The information gathered helps us to monitor performance of our recycling schemes and target our resources more effectively so that education and awareness can be aimed at underperforming areas.

Will the chips be used to charge me for my waste?

There are currently no plans to charge households directly for the waste they produce. Part of the rates you pay covers the collection of bins. Vehicles on the recycling schemes are not fitted with weighing equipment and so the weight of your bin is not currently recorded.

What happens if I remove the chip?

If the collection vehicle cannot read the chip your bin may not be emptied.

Can I access the information held about my address?

All information collected is protected. Only authorised staff can look at it. Under the Data Protection Act you are entitled to see any information that we hold against your address.

If you wish to see this information please telephone 028 91 270 302.
